frequently asked questions

why a design?

The cost of a garden design quickly pays for itself. A clear plan means potential problems can be ironed out before construction or planting commences - so actually saving money in the long term.

when?

If you want to improve your property it is best to sort out your garden as soon as possible. The garden is your biggest 'room' but the cheapest to improve. Many people will spend thousands on a new kitchen but leave virtually nothing for the garden which will give years of pleasure.

how much?

Design fees start from around £800 for a small garden.

It is important to decide how much you want to allocate to the garden. It can be very difficult to pin this down to an exact figure but it is a good idea to think about this. I can give a rough idea of the total cost over the phone and, if you wish, arrange a no obligation site visit. This is charged at a flat fee of £50 to cover time and travelling expenses. If you decide to go ahead this fee is deducted from the final bill.

what should we do?

Think of how you want to use the garden - is it for entertaining? is it for children to play in? do you want to eat in it? do you want it for sunbathing? do you want a lot of colour? Get all members of the household to draw up a list of their likes and dislikes so that everyone's needs can be met. You should also be realistic about the amount of time that you are going to be able to spend gardening - so you don't end up working flat out keeping it looking neat if you already have a busy lifestyle. There is no such thing as a no-maintenance garden but careful design can help create a low-maintenance garden. If you have any existing drawings or surveys of the garden please have these available as it can save a lot of time (and therefore money).

what will wild-thyme do?

Once you have confirmed the commission in writing, we start work on the design which will include layout drawings showing paths, ponds, terraces etc and planting suggestions.

can we make changes?

Of course! You need to end up with a garden which meets your needs. Usually minor amendments are not charged but if you want to make a major change then costs might be involved.

what about plants?

Often the most 'fun' part of the garden. We source, supply and deliver high quality plants at competitive prices. These can be planted by us, the contractor or yourself - should you prefer.
